Two Lips

By Andra Chase

Named for two tulips in the front garden, this gnome home features two towers united by a living wall. There’s a relationship between the two stumps, which were found together. This piece, which can’t help but echo the Twin Towers, is transformed in the world of the gnomes, filled with hopeful symbols and elements — a bird’s nest up top, cedar driftwood from Table Rock Lake, glowing stained glass and a bright red door. In the sunlight, the mosses of the living wall glow, as does the door, which features tiny holes to let the light shine through. Andra has been working on this piece for the past three years, collaborating with her daughter, Trina, to find objects in nature and another artist, Maggie, to create the windows. It’s one of her favorites.
